One of the last pictures taken of Bethel School. It was torn down around October, 2020. A new trailer sits where the school once was. I was lucky enough to drive out there and take photos before it vanished.
Bethel School sat on LL 193 of Section 24 in the McDaniel District. The school house was built likely some time after 1903 and before 1914. It is not indicated on J.W. Henley's map from 1903. It is shown in the Pickens County Heritage Book with pictures from 1914 and 1932.
The school routinely housed over seventy students. Children from local families with familiar surnames like Chastain, Hightower, Moss, Mulkey, Stone and Young could be found there along with less prolific names such as Callahan, and Gravely.
Found across the street, Bethel Christian Church was founded in 1854. Interestingly, there are two other cemeteries nearby besides Bethel cemetery: Mountain Top, and Holmes Cemetery.
