Recently a photocopy of a hand drawn map of the way from Jasper and Tate to Mt. Burrell (now known as Burnt Mountain) has found its way into my collection. I can verify the authenticity of the map by one-hundred percent certainty. Who better to have drawn the map than the late Professor E.C. Perrow, surveyor of Col. Sam Tate and his Tate Mountain Estates and later, between 1933 and 1934, Camp Superintendent for CCC Camp 1449 - P-77 of Pickens County.
*Camp 1449 was located at the Dude Ranch site, the former property of the Whittington family.
His map places the Dude Ranch location just north of Bent Tree Admin and east of the current Little Pine Mountain Rd. There were several buildings associated with the ranch to include:
bunkhouse
large house
barn
kitchen/dining hall
It is clear from the map that the dirt roads through what is now Bent Tree have moved somewhat from their original locations a bit. Regardless, the terrain largely remains unchanged. Mole Mountain, Mt. Oglethorpe and Hendrix Mountain and their corresponding topography is the same.
Below is a picture of the map.
Professor Eber Carle Perrow was a graduate of Duke and Harvard University. He was a world renowned collector of American Folksongs. Before he arrived in Pickens County, Georgia he taught in Indiana, Wisconsin and Kentucky. He was a polymath that was fluent in seven languages and was the author of three books: The Last Will and Testament as a Form of Literature, Unto the Hills and Background. Apart from being the surveyor of Pickens County for 33 years, he also served as the personal surveyor of Col. Sam Tate and his Tate Mountain Estates.
